Macworld San Francisco 2009 - Round Up

As the media start to go into overdrive in anticipation of the Macworld San Francisco 2009, we take a look at what the event may hold in the way of new products.

New iMac and Mac Mini
The most likely hardware releases for Macworld San Francisco include updated versions of the iMac and Mac mini. The mac mini hasn't seen an upgrade for many years, so long in fact that many are wondering if the mac mini has been dumped in favour of a new product line entirely. I'm doubtful of this as it leaves a gap in apple's product line that needs to be filled.
While there has been talk about these updates for months, the most convincing evidence actually came from Apple themselves. The latest versions of Mac OS X were found to include references to NVIDIA-based iMacs and Mac minis. The NVIDIA chipsets were just introduced into Apple's notebook line and promise faster graphics hardware for these new models. Other claims from AppleInsider suggest that the mini will get some significant new features, including FireWire 800, dual-monitor capabilities and an additional USB port. All of these changes will be welcome to this otherwise neglected product line.

Snow Leopard
It's almost a given that we expect to see more information coming to the front concerning Snow Leopard. (Snow Leopard will be the next major realease of the Mac OS Platform) Some reports have suggested that Phil Schiller may demonstrate or provide more info on Apple's upcoming Mac OS X revision codenamed Snow Leopard. An Apple employee presentation first suggested that we could see the release of Snow Leopard in the first quarter of 2009. Meanwhile, Apple rushed certification of OpenCL to be ready in time for Snow Leopard's release.

iPhone and iPhone Nano

The rumor that has gotten the most attention seems to be more wishful think rather than a solid business decision. In fact, we had originally heard that Apple was planning on focusing on Mac products at Macworld, though this was well before Apple's announcement that they were withdrawing from the event. Personally we think that the iPhone nano is really not a viaable product range and coupling that with the fact that any/all apllication would need re-writing for the iPhone Nano's smaller screen size. This coupled with the dilema about which features you pull out to make the normal iPhone a superior product.
